Innocence and Loss of Innocence:A Never-Ending Story

Description

We are born innocent. Or are we? Since we left the Garden of Eden, we have lost our innocence and are still looking for it — in a New World, a virginal lake, a baby’s face, or, simply a fresh sheet of paper or a new set of sheets. This quest for the pure, the unblemished, the ideal, leads us to aspire and dream and create. It also leads us to deny and betray what might “soil” this image of innocence, including those parts of ourselves that long for life and depth.

The Greeks portrayed this circle of innocence and betrayal in the great myth of Demeter and Persephone. With the help of the two goddesses, we shall explore both why we need to seek innocence and why we need to lose it and what are the traps along the way to being not perfect, but whole.
